26 photos that show the rare astronomical event in all of its glory

On Monday, droves of people donned protective eyewear and headed outdoors to catch a glimpse of the total solar eclipse.

In the United States, the sun was fully covered across 15 states along the “path of totality.” For 49 states, a partial eclipse was visible. The partial eclipse began near Mazatlán, Mexico at 12:51 p.m. ET and crossed the U.S. at 1:27 p.m. local time. The partial eclipse ends in Caribou, Maine at 4:40 p.m. ET.

This event marked the last opportunity to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for approximately 20 years.

These are some photos of the total solar eclipse in all of its glory.
