Oxnard liquor store sells $1.6M Powerball ticket

A lucky — or unlucky — person was just one number off from getting all six numbers in Wednesday’s $1.09 billion Powerball jackpot with a ticket sold at a Ventura County liquor store.

The $1.6 million winning ticket, which matched the first five digits, was bought at Oxnard Shores Bottle Shoppe, California State Lottery officials said. Another second-place ticket was sold at an Albertsons in San Dimas in the San Gabriel Valley.

The $1.09 billion prize at stake was the fourth-largest Powerball jackpot and the ninth-largest U.S. lottery pot, lottery officials said. It accumulated over three months and raised about $80 million for public education.

The next drawing will be Saturday, and the jackpot will reach $1.23 billion. The winner has a choice of receiving the full prize over 30 annual payments or taking a lump sum check worth $595.1 million, lottery officials said.

Last month, a Van Nuys liquor store sold a Mega Millions ticket worth more than $1 million. Had the ticket matched all six numbers instead of just five, the lotto player would had won $1.1 billion. Also in March, state lottery officials named the man who bought a jackpot-winning Powerball ticket in October from a Frazier Park market that was worth nearly $1.8 billion.

In July 2023, Master’s Donuts in Oxnard sold a Mega Millions ticket worth $1.6 million when someone matched five of six digits.
