An ambulance thief suspect’s last shot

ST. LOUIS – One more chance to stay out of jail for a man accused of stealing an ambulance and engaging police in a high-drama pursuit.

It’s a scene that played out exclusively on FOX 2 in October 2022.

It was an hour of high drama in which even a crash didn’t stop the ambulance, as it pushed the vehicle out of the way and backed into a police car to maneuver clear.

Police identified the man behind the wheel as Dwane Vardiman, 49. He was charged with four felonies for the incident. He later got a break after spending about a year in jail. A judge allowed his release, pending a June trial, if he wore a GPS ankle monitor.

In February, FOX 2 reported that Vardiman reportedly violated that monitor eight times at a pace of about once per week. He was ordered to court to answer why and was given another chance after his attorney argued that the violations could be traced to apparent visits to grocery stores and job opportunities.

We’ve continued checking the court record and found more violations—another nine. The continued violations came at a pace of about one every five days this time around. The judge noticed too and ordered him back to court to explain.

At this latest court hearing on Thursday, Vardiman said the violations were due to travel with his new landscaping job. The judge said it’s Vardiman’s responsibility to inform the GPS tracking company when he’s outside the ordered boundary, as the judge added, “You are under a microscope.”

The judge gave Vardiman one more chance to stay out of jail before trial, warning that one more violation means an immediate arrest warrant before there’s another court hearing to talk about it.
