A large cargo ship crashed into the pillars of a major Baltimore bridge on Tuesday morning, causing it to partially collapse as vehicles and victims plunged into the waters below.
At least two people were rescued from under the Francis Scott Key Bridge, according to James Wallace, the chief of the Baltimore City Fire Department. One of the victims is in “very serious condition,” he said.
Wallace said rescuers were looking for at least seven people; it’s unclear if that total includes the two who were already rescued.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and the FBI is on the scene.
The 1.2-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge, named after the poet who wrote the “Star-Spangled Banner,” spans a major thoroughfare of East Coast shipping.
