Sioux Falls School District identifies teacher tied to solicitation charge

The Sioux Falls School District has identified the teacher fired last week, following his arrest in connection with solicitation of a minor. And district officials told parents in an email Monday that he won’t be returning to Whittier Middle School, regardless of how the investigation plays out.

The message sent to parents of children at Whittier, and obtained by the Argus Leader, named Justin Preuschl as the teacher arrested Thursday.

While the email stated the school needed to allow the process of the investigation to play out, the message also stated the district was aware “the initial concerns stem from contacts with someone in Iowa.”

An initial email sent to parents Thursday stated no information indicated the arrest was related to Whittier Middle School.

Court documents allege Preuschl attempted to solicit a 13-year-old child sometime between Jan. 1 and March 21. He remains in the Minnehaha County Jail with a $100,000 bond, with conditions including no contact with people younger than 18 years of age and no internet access.

The message to parents also stated what would be shared with students who had Preuschl in class:

“While we do not know details of what occurred with Mr. Preuschl, we do know that he will not be back teaching at Whittier, regardless of the outcome. With that said, if anyone does have concerns or information specific to him, they should contact law enforce or our SRO and to talk with their parents. This is an ongoing police investigation that we currently know very little about, but as always, students can talk with their counselors, and we encourage you to do so if needed.”

Preuschl was hired on as a history teacher at Whittier Middle School making $50,111, effective Aug. 11, 2023, according to Aug. 14, 2023 school board meeting minutes.

Before that, he’d worked as a substitute teacher in the district since Aug. 31, 2022, making $160 per day, according to Sept. 26, 2022 meeting minutes.

His alternative teaching certificate, issued Dec. 8, 2023 and expiring July 1, 2025, is currently active, indicating the Professional Teacher Practices and Standards Commission hasn’t acted on any potential complaints yet. His LinkedIn indicates he was going to be finishing up his master of education degree and obtaining his full teaching license at the University of Sioux Falls by May 2024.
