Niangua man dead after reported chase, shooting involving police officer

A fatal shooting involving a City of Niangua police officer occurred Wednesday night near Marshfield, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

Webster County Sheriff Roye Cole said the officer shot and killed a man about 9 p.m. at a home on Myrtle Street in Niangua after the suspect reportedly produced a weapon.

Cole released details to the News-Leader on Thursday morning, noting that the early information is subject to change.

“It appears suspect had been under investigation for child abuse/neglect, was pulled over, and was being detained for driving while revoked,” Cole said in a message. “But the suspect fled to his nearby house while officers chased on foot. Suspect grabbed gun and started to use it and Niangua officer responded to the threat with gun. Officer and deputy did first aid till EMS arrived and took over. Suspect then passed from gun shots.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting. No other information, including the name of the deceased, has been released.
