An inmate at the Norfolk City Jail died following a medical emergency early Friday morning, according to the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office.

Other inmates in the cell block alerted deputies about the situation and a medical team responded. The inmate was taken to a hospital and died several hours later, the sheriff’s office said in a release.

The deceased inmate’s name has not been made public pending notification of their next of kin.

“The safety and security of those in our custody is always our top concern,” the sheriff’s office stated.

The investigation is ongoing.
