A 58-year-old man accused of robbing a downtown Eureka bank had an immediate change of heart, California police reported.

The man passed a note to a teller demanding cash, then ran away with the money around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, a Eureka Police Department news release said.

As he walked away, the man “began to regret his actions” and surrendered to deputies at a nearby courthouse security checkpoint minutes later, police said.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office notified police as officers searched for the man in downtown Eureka, police said.

All the stolen cash was recovered, police said. The man was not armed.

The Eureka resident faces a robbery charge, police said. Eureka is about a 270-mile drive northwest of San Francisco.
