Wilmington woman charged in connection with baby’s death after sleeping with infant

A 24-year-old woman from Wilmington has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of her infant.

Mackenzie Katlyn Reed was additionally charged with felony child abuse causing serious injury and child abuse/neglect causing serious physical injury on March 6, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department.

These charges follow an investigation into an incident which occurred on Oct. 3, 2023. Officers arrived at the 800 block of Castle Street for an unconscious infant who was not breathing, according to the release. First responders were unable to revive the infant and the infant died.

Investigations revealed that the infant had been suffocated in the night while co-sleeping with Reed.

Reed had another child who died from co-sleeping in 2022.

The Wilmington police Special Victims Unit and the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office collaborated on the investigation.

Reed is being held under a $500,000 secured bond as of Thursday.
