A 10-year-old hiding in a car witnessed his mom’s boyfriend shoot her to death in the front yard, then kidnap his 6-year-old sibling, Tennessee officials said.

Now, the man has been found guilty on all charges including first-degree premeditated murder and kidnapping, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office announced Feb. 27.

Byron Pipkin, now 35, was accused of killing his girlfriend, Marquicha Thomas, on June 30, 2022.

McClatchy News reached out to the man’s attorneys on Feb. 28 and did not immediately receive a response.

During the week-long trial, three kids, all under the age of 13, testified to the events.

Pipkin and 28-year-old Thomas were arguing in the garage of a home outside Memphis when the woman ran out of the garage, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said in an arrest affidavit.

Then, Pipkin gunned her down in the front yard, according to deputies. He dragged her body into the garage, where the woman’s 10-year-old son was hiding in a car and had witnessed the shooting, officials said.

Then, Pipkin went inside the house, told the woman’s 6-year-old girl to come with him and fled the scene, deputies told WREG.

As he left, he called 911 and reported he was following a man who had just shot his girlfriend, deputies said. He gave the name of another person who investigators said wasn’t involved or at the residence, according to the affidavit.

He dropped the 6-year-old off at the home of a family member’s friend before he made his way to a motel in south Memphis, officials said.

The next day, detectives found him at the motel, according to the sheriff’s office. The district attorney’s office said he was taken into custody after a “tense” three-hour SWAT standoff.

The 10-year-old who hid in the car, now 12, “played a crucial role in providing evidence,” the district attorney’s office said.

Thomas’ friends and family mourned the mother’s death.

“They don’t know, when they take a loved one, they don’t know how much it really hurt to lose my only daughter I have,” her father, Marcus Brisco, told WREG in July 2022.
