Feb. 25—ENMU receives $2 million donation from Allsup Family Charitable Foundation

Eastern New Mexico University has received its largest-ever single gift: a $2 million donation from the Allsup Family Charitable Foundation.

The money will be used to fund early childhood development initiatives, including scholarship, internship and farm-to-table food education programs, as well as education, health care, agriculture and business programs at ENMU.

“On behalf of ENMU, I express our deepest appreciation to the Allsup Family Charitable Foundation. Gifts such as this are truly transformational,” Chancellor James Johnston said in a news release announcing the donation.

New Mexico School for the Arts-Art Institute to host ArtSpring 2024 in April

New Mexico School for the Arts-Art Institute will host ArtSpring 2024, a showcase of exceptional talents from the local charter school on the Lensic Performing Arts Center’s stage.

Three performances will take place over the course of two days, culminating in a gala April 24 to showcase the talents of New Mexico School for the Arts students in creative writing, dance, music, theater and visual arts.

NNMC president joins national network of Presidents for Latino Student Success

Hector Balderas, president of Northern New Mexico College, has affiliated with the nationwide network of Presidents for Latino Student Success, a network of university heads committed to creating learning environments where Latino students thrive.

Through the network, Balderas will collaborate with more than 150 higher education leaders across the country to advance Latino student success efforts.

“As the president of an institution that serves an overwhelmingly Hispanic and Indigenous student population, I am honored to learn and work side by side with this group, as we work to strengthen student success for our communities,” Balderas said in a news release announcing the affiliation.

Regulation and Licensing Department offers ‘open opportunity’ for financial education workshops in Indigenous communities

The New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department’s Financial Institutions Division has extended its “open opportunity” financial education workshops and technical assistance to Indigenous communities for another year.

The services, which are free of charge and customized, are geared toward helping adults, seniors and youth better understand foundational concepts surrounding money and resource management.

“Our Native communities have had a long history, [since] time immemorial, in managing resources. We need to continue to listen, learn and reflect on how that has served us today,” Vickie K. Oldman, a Diné financial coach who leads the workshops, said in a news release announcing the program.
