22 shot, 1 dead and 3 in custody after shots fired at Chiefs’ Super Bowl rally


One person is dead and more than 20 others have been injured after shots were fired Wednesday during a Super Bowl victory celebration for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves told reporters that police are still working to determine the total number of victims, but the “gunshot wound total has gone up to 22.”

The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. local time outside Kansas City’s Union Station. At a press conference Wednesday evening, law enforcement officials said three people were in custody for investigation in connection with the shooting. A motive for the shooting has not yet been identified.

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl over the weekend, and an estimated 1 million fans packed downtown Kansas City on Wednesday to celebrate. This is the first time that a victory celebration has been marred by gunfire in the city.

    Wednesday’s shooting in Kansas City was the 48th mass shooting in the United States in 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which describes itself as “an online archive of gun violence incidents collected from over 7,500 law enforcement, media, government and commercial sources.”

    Wednesday was also the sixth anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

    One person is dead and 10 to 15 people have been following the shooting, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said during a Wednesday press conference. She said police are still gathering information on the exact number and status of the victims, though she does not “believe” any victims were children.

    The police chief said two suspects have been brought into custody, and it is still an active investigation. When asked if fans were involved in the apprehension of the suspects, Graves could not confirm that information.
