AMD Raises Outlook for AI Chips. It Wasn’t Enough.

Advanced Micro Devices increased its guidance for data center AI chip sales.

On a conference call late Tuesday with investors and analysts, CEO Lisa Su said that AMD expects revenue for its data center GPU products to surpass $3.5 billion in 2024.

Three months ago, Su forecast that its MI300 GPU revenue would surpass $2 billion this year. The MI300, a data-center GPU, is AMD’s offering for powering AI projects and AI applications.

“Customer response to MI300 has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are aggressively ramping production to support the dozens of cloud, enterprise and supercomputing customers deploying Instinct accelerators,” Su said.

Some analysts on Wall Street had higher MI300 forecasts for 2024.

The company reported fourth-quarter results on Tuesday that were roughly in line with estimates, but the company’s first-quarter outlook was slightly disappointing.

AMD shares are now down 6% following the earnings results.
