Crash that killed motorcyclist closes southbound I-5 in Smokey Point

All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 are closed in Smokey Point after a 3-vehicle crash that killed a man riding a motorcycle.

The crash was reported at around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The lanes are closed just south of State Route 531/172nd Street Northeast. The closure stretches for four miles, from Arlington to the Tulalip Casino and outlet mall.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding said a motorcycle, Jeep and a semi-truck were involved. She said the motorcycle was speeding when it hit the Jeep. When the Jeep pulled over, the semi hit the motorcycle and its rider.

Troopers are looking into whether other cars were involved.

Troopers were seen walking back and forth on a long stretch of the freeway, where crash debris is strewn over the road.

There is no estimated time for when the lanes will reopen, so drivers should avoid the area.

Drivers can use Highway 9 to get around the closure.

To make matters worse, at 6 a.m., a crash closed both directions of SR 531 at Third Avenue Northeast in Arlington.
