SC driver denied bond for crash that killed mom, unborn child

A South Carolina man is accused of causing a three-car crash that killed a mom and her unborn child back in October.

The solicitor in Chester County said Charles Jones III was expected to make a first appearance in criminal court on Monday.

That crash happened on Oct. 25 on Saluda Road in Chester County.

Investigators claim Jones was under the influence when he caused it. Kaitlyn Potter and her unborn child died, and two children in another car were hurt as well.

Channel 9′s Tina Terry learned Monday that Potter’s three-year-old son was seriously hurt in the crash, and he is still in the hospital.

During a court hearing on Monday, detectives said Jones was going north on the highway when he veered off the road and hit two cars, including Potter’s.

Jones had a .277 blood alcohol level, more than three times the legal limit. It also happened after three known DUI convictions from 1999, 2003, and 2007.

Jones had gotten his license back in 2015 after it was suspended multiple times.

His attorney said Jones has been in the hospital since the crash, so his bond hearing was delayed. But Potter’s family members were in court — they, along with the solicitor, pleaded with the judge to keep Jones in jail.

“There’s no reason to be continuously having DUIs,” said Solicitor Randy Newman.

After a few hours, the judge decided to deny bond for Jones in this case.
