Colerain High School student accused of punching teacher, causing ‘severe brain injury’

A 15-year-old Colerain High School student is facing felony charges after allegedly assaulting a teacher Thursday, police said.

Colerain Township police school resource officers were alerted around 2:18 p.m. that a teacher had been assaulted by a student in a classroom, officials with the department said in a news release Friday.

The student punched the teacher in her head causing “a severe brain injury requiring extensive medical treatment,” according to an incident report obtained by The Enquirer through an Ohio Open Records Act request.

Police said the 60-year-old teacher was taken by paramedics to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The teen is also accused of harming another 15-year-old student by grabbing him and pinching his neck.

Police said officers confronted the student in the lobby of the school’s career center, where he appeared to be experiencing hallucinations and suffering from a self-inflicted head wound.

Before the alleged assault, the teen had started acting distraught, according to the report.

The teen was taken to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for treatment before being released into police custody and sent to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center.

The teen is charged with felonious assault and assault. The Enquirer does not name juveniles charged with crimes unless their charges are transferred to adult court.

Officials initially said in their release that the student is 16 years old, however, police records show he is 15.

“Northwest Local Schools has confirmed that the incident was isolated and that there is no current threat to the school community regarding the matter,” the release states. “The district remains resolute in their commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all students and staff.”

Counselors were made available Friday morning to students and staff emotionally impacted by the incident.
