André Baugher, the Emmy-winning actor who starred in the hit television series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, died Monday at the age of 61.

Braugher died after a brief illness, his publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed to Variety on Tuesday. No additional details were available at the time of publication.

The actor was born on July 1, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University and a Masters in Fine Arts from Juilliard.

In addition to his television work, Braugher also co-starred in the 2012 film Baytown Outlaws, the Passengers in 2008, opposite Anne Hathaway, and in the 2007 Frank Darabont film The Mist, based on the novel by Stephen King.

Braugher was best known for his roles as Detective Frank Pembleton in NBC‘s police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street in the 1990s and as Captain Raymond Holt in the FOX police procedural comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013 until 2021.

Amassing 11 Emmy nominations and two wins throughout his career, Braugher is noted as one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. Braugher performance in the FX mini-series Thief earned him one of the awards along with his breakout role of Pembleton.

Braugher was a fan favorite on Brooklyn Nine-Nine due to his matter-of-fact attitude, especially when working with co-star Andy Samberg’s Detective Jake Peralta in a scene.

Braugher won the 1998 Emmy Award for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street. Watch the moment here:

Fans took to social media to thank Braugher for bringing Captain Holt to their screens, sharing clips of their favorite moments from the comedy.

Tributes poured in on X, formerly Twitter, where people referred to Braugher as a “legend” and an “absolute treasure.”

“From the HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET pilot,” Jay Faerber posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Our first real look at the mercurial Frank Pembleton, played so magnificently by André Braugher. May he rest in peace. I’ll likely be posting more of his standout scenes from Homicide in the coming days. He’s a legend.”

“André Braugher was incredible on Homicide, but he was an absolute treasure as Captain Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” Mike Beauvais said on X.
