Historically, Iowa hasn’t been a great predictor of Republican nominees. In 1988, Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kansas) won the state’s GOP caucuses — the later nominee George H.W. Bush finished a distant third. In an interview with Meet the Press the day before the caucuses, Dole joined Meet the Press and was asked whether he could survive a loss in the state.
